Brenda Schwinn recalled the day that a mother of one of her ballet students came to her with some news: There was a new boy in town, just moved here from Kentucky. Like most ballet instructors, Schwinn was always on the lookout for young men to fill out her company roster, so she dispatched the mother back to see if he was interested in coming to one of her classes.

Eifman Ballet, the Russian contemporary ensemble from St. Petersburg on a 40th anniversary U.S. tour, rolled into Segerstrom Center for the Arts on Friday night with an updated version of the choreographer's seminal work, "Red Giselle." Performed in Costa Mesa through Sunday, this tribute to the legendary Russian ballerina Olga Spessivtseva is not company founder and artistic director Boris Eifman's first ballet, but it is certainly the template for his dance-theater melodramas.

With a few notable exceptions, "Giselle" and "Romeo and Juliet" come instantly to my mind, declarative dance which spends twenty minutes to hammer out an "I love you" through pirouettes can be draining and leave the audience thinking "Just spit it out."

A male Japanese dancer took the top prize and his female compatriot grabbed third place in their respective senior divisions of an international ballet competition held Monday in Moscow, sources revealed prior to the official announcement of the results. At the XIII International Ballet Competition and Contest of Choreographers held at the famed Bolshoi Theatre, Koya Okawa, a 25-year-old native of Aomori Prefecture, earned first in the men's duet category, and Midori Terada, 24, from Toyonaka, Osaka Prefecture, won third prize for the women's duet division.
